Toys that help children understand what is happening
Materials for funeral directors, schools and care professionals who involve children in illness, dying and farewell. Developed in practice, in use in eight countries.
Why play works in grief
Children do not understand dying through explanation alone. They understand it by doing: carrying a coffin, closing a grave, driving the hearse. In play a child can repeat what it cannot put into words, and stop as soon as it is enough. The child sets the pace, not the adult.
That makes this material neither therapy nor a method with a fixed protocol. It is a tool. It gives a conversation something to hold on to, including for the adult who does not quite know how to begin. What matters stays the same: being honest, explaining at the child’s level, and staying close when it gets hard.
Not every child acts it out, and that is fine. One child only watches; another picks it up weeks later. The material makes that possible; it forces nothing.
